11/29/20 - Strength in Stillness
OPENING TRAILS
Micah 5:2 (NKJV)
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”
This verse shows the infinite wisdom of God in declaring a "little" city of Judah for the birth of Jesus.
THE PATH
Several weeks ago I was working on some paperwork late into the night. When I finished about 2am, I felt a sense of satisfaction at finishing the work, but Deeper, I felt an unexpected Strength from the Stillness in the room. I felt God's Strength and Refreshing in the late night.
I was reminded of Psalm 46:10 (NASB) :
"Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
God provides an inner strength as we acknowledge His Greatness.
Elijah has executed the prophets of Baal. Now he was on the run from Jezebel.
5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Three parts of the story are of note :
1. God prepares a meal
2. God speaks through the stillness
3. God provides direction
A similar pattern is found in Psalm 23 (NKJV)
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness, for His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
These familiar verses provide a similar pattern as 1 Kings 19 :
1. God leads us by Stillness
2. God prepares a meal
3. God anoints us to provide direction
Our greatest moments of strength and wisdom are often found in resting in God's Presence.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
